What to look for when choosing a power bank?
To make sure your power bank serves you as you want it to, there are a few facts to consider before choosing one. First of all:
- What devices do you plan to charge with the power bank?
- What capacity should the power bank have?
- Will you be using it only at home or at work or even on the go?
- Do you need fast charging or is normal charging speed enough?
- Are you limited by price?
Battery capacity
The most important part of a power bank is the battery. Its capacity determines how many devices you can charge from the power bank and how long the power bank will last. The battery capacity of a power bank is expressed in mAh (milliampere hour) and indicates how much current the power bank will be able to supply for how long. For example, a capacity of 2,000 mAh means that the power bank will be able to deliver 2,000 mA for one hour, or 1,000 mA for 2 hours, or even 0.5 mA for 4 hours, etc.
How many mAh do you need to charge your mobile phone?
It depends on the capacity of its battery. You can usually find this information in the device's parameters when you buy it. Again, look for a number with a mAh unit. For example, if your phone has a capacity of 2,500 mAh, that means you can charge it 2x from a 5,000 mAh power bank. Actually, it's more like 1x, because the capacity claimed by power bank manufacturers is usually about 30% to 40% higher than the power bank can actually deliver. From this point of view, it would seem that it is best to choose a power bank with the maximum possible capacity. In reality, however, you have to take into account that as the capacity increases, the size and weight of the power bank also increases, and it might not be a small device that fits in your pocket.
Ideal battery capacity of a power bank
- With a powerbank up to 5,000 mAh you can charge your phone once, maybe even together with a smartwatch or mp3 player.
- A cheap 5,000 mAh power bank is perfect for travel because it is lightweight and portable.
- Powerbanks above 5,000 mAh and up to 15,000 mAh can charge your phone up to 3 times and are therefore ideal for long stays in the countryside. If you focus on additional equipment, the 10,000mAh powerbank can also serve as a flashlight in your tent.
- The 15,000 mAh capacity is also enough to charge a tablet, for example, in which you have a navigation device.
- With a power bank with a capacity of more than 15,000 mAh, you can charge your laptop, charge your mobile phone up to 10 times, and even charge your smartwatch or Bluetooth headset.
- The 30,000 mAh power bank with the Power delivery fast charging function will provide enough power for your MacBook, iPhone, but also Apple Watch or You can use it both at home and for several days trips outside civilization.
What types of powerbanks can you choose from?
If you only need to charge your phone occasionally, even when you're away from the mains, you'll be fine:
- A power bank with a charging cable with USB output and a capacity of up to 5,000 mAh. Get a cable compatible with your type of device.
- But if you're looking for a special power bank that gives you convenience and you're not afraid to pay extra for it, you can choose from these types:
- wireless power banks
Charge your mobile phone, tablet or headphones without the use of cables. Wireless power banks work on the principle of Qi technology, which uses electromagnetic induction. The prerequisite for its proper functioning is the stable attachment of two coils to each other within a distance of no more than a few millimetres. One of the coils is in the charging pad and the other in the device being charged.
- power banks for tablets
This type of powerbank has a capacity of at least 20,000 mAh. Tablet powerbanks very often also offer Quick Charge 3.0 support for Android tablets or Power delivery for Apple tablets.
- power banks for laptops
For effective charging of laptops from a power bank, choose a capacity of at least 20,000 mAh, optimally at least 30,000 mAh. Laptops are already big energy guzzlers, and if you don't want to be left completely without power when you're away from the mains, investing in a high-capacity power bank is definitely worth it. Support for fast charging should be a given in this case.
- power banks with fast charging
Fast charging is needed for powerbanks if you don't want to wait and need to have your phone, tablet or laptop charged again in the shortest possible time. For Android devices, power banks with fast charging should have Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 protocol, for Apple devices look for Power delivery. A prerequisite for fast charging to work is that your device supports it, as well as a matching cable. For example, to fast charge your Apple iPhone 8, you will need a cable with USB-C/Lightning connectors.
